Faithful Figures from Africa in the Biblical Story
The Bible is often remembered as a story centered in the lands of Israel and the Middle East. Yet many of its events also connect with regions of Africa and the people who lived there.
Throughout Scripture, we find individuals from African regions who played important roles in God’s unfolding story. Some offered wisdom, some demonstrated courage, and others provided help during critical moments in biblical history.
These figures remind us that the biblical story is broader than one nation or culture. God worked through people from many lands and backgrounds.
This section of the Bible Quiz Project explores several of these individuals and the lessons their lives teach us.

Black Heroes of the Bible– Courage and Quick Action
One remarkable woman connected with Africa in the Bible is Zipporah, Moses’s wife.
In Exodus 4:24-26, Zipporah saves Moses’ life by performing a circumcision on their son to fulfill the covenant with God. While traveling to Egypt, God sought to kill Moses for failing to meet this requirement. Zipporah immediately used a flint knife, touching the foreskin to Moses’ feet and declaring him a “bridegroom of blood,” which caused God to spare him.
She was the daughter of the Midianite priest Jethro, also called Reuel. Moses met her after fleeing Egypt and living in the land of Midian.
Zipporah and Moses had two sons named Gershom and Eliezer.
In one dramatic moment recorded in the book of Exodus, Zipporah acted quickly to save Moses’ life during their journey back to Egypt by performing a circumcision for their son. Her decisive action demonstrated courage and understanding of the covenant God had given to Israel.
Lesson from Zipporah
• Courage sometimes requires quick action.
• Faithfulness to God’s covenant matters.
• God works through courageous women as well as men.
Jethro – Wisdom and Leadership
Zipporah’s father, Jethro, was a respected priest and leader in Midian.
After Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt, Jethro visited the Israelite camp and observed Moses attempting to judge every dispute among the people by himself.
Recognizing the strain this placed on Moses, Jethro offered wise advice. He recommended appointing capable leaders to help judge smaller matters while Moses handled the most serious cases.
This guidance led to the creation of a decentralized system of leadership and justice among the Israelites.
Lesson from Jethro
• Wise counsel can strengthen leadership.
• Good leaders listen to advice.
• Effective organization benefits an entire community.
Hobab – Guide Through the Wilderness

Another Midianite associated with Moses was Hobab, a relative of Moses and a skilled desert guide.
In Numbers 10:29–32, Moses asked Hobab to travel with the Israelites as they journeyed toward the Promised Land. Hobab possessed deep knowledge of the desert terrain and survival in the wilderness.
His guidance helped the Israelites determine safe places to camp and navigate difficult environments.
Lesson from Hobab
• Knowledge and experience can serve others.
• Every person’s skills can contribute to a larger mission.
Simon of Cyrene – Strength in a Moment of Suffering
One of the most striking African figures in the New Testament is Simon of Cyrene.
Simon was from Cyrene, a city located in what is now modern-day Libya in North Africa.
As Jesus was being led to crucifixion, Roman soldiers compelled Simon to carry the cross for Him along the road to Golgotha.
Though the moment was brief, Simon’s action became part of one of the most important events in Christian history.
Lesson from Simon of Cyrene
• Sometimes people are called unexpectedly into significant moments.
• Helping others carry burdens is an act of compassion.
The Queen of Sheba – Seeking Wisdom
The famous Queen of Sheba traveled great distances to visit Solomon.
Her kingdom is widely believed to have been located in the region of modern Ethiopia or Yemen.
Curious about Solomon’s reputation for wisdom, she visited Jerusalem with a caravan of gifts and difficult questions. After hearing Solomon’s answers and seeing the prosperity of his kingdom, she praised God for granting Solomon such wisdom.
Lesson from the Queen of Sheba
• True wisdom attracts seekers.
• Those who search sincerely for truth often find it.
Ebed-Melech – Courage to Defend the Truth
Another African figure in the Bible is Ebed-Melech, a Cushite official serving in King Zedekiah’s court.
When the prophet Jeremiah was thrown into a muddy cistern to die, Ebed-Melech courageously approached the king and pleaded for Jeremiah’s life.
With the king’s permission, Ebed-Melech gathered ropes and cloths and carefully lifted Jeremiah out of the pit.
His compassion and bravery saved the prophet’s life.
Lesson from Ebed-Melech
• Courage can protect the innocent.
• Speaking up for justice requires bravery.
The Ethiopian Eunuch — A Seeker of Truth
One of the most important African figures in the New Testament is the Ethiopian Eunuch mentioned in the book of Acts of the Apostles (Acts 8:26–40).
He was a high official serving the queen of Ethiopia (Candace). While traveling from Jerusalem, he was reading the book of Isaiah, but did not fully understand it.
The evangelist Philip the Evangelist met him on the road and explained the Scripture to him, after hearing the message about Jesus, the Ethiopian eunuch believed and was baptized.
Many historians believe this moment marked one of the earliest introductions of Christianity into Africa.
Lesson from the Ethiopian Eunuch
• A sincere search for truth leads to understanding.
• God guides those who seek Him.
Moses — A Leader Raised in Africa
Although Moses was born to Hebrew parents, he was raised in the royal household of Egypt.
Egypt is located in Africa, and Moses spent much of his life there before leading the Israelites out of bondage.
During his years in Egypt, Moses was educated in the wisdom and culture of that great civilization.
Lesson from Moses
• God can prepare leaders through many cultures and experiences.
• Leadership often grows through difficult seasons.
Joseph — A Leader in Egypt
Another important figure connected with Africa is Joseph.
After being sold into slavery by his brothers, Joseph eventually rose to become a powerful leader in Egypt.
Through wisdom and careful planning, Joseph helped Egypt survive a devastating famine and later saved his own family.
Lesson from Joseph
• Faithfulness during hardship can lead to great purpose.
• God can transform injustice into opportunity.
Jeremiah’s Rescuer: Ebed-Melech the Cushite
You already included Ebed-Melech, but it’s worth emphasizing his significance.
The Bible specifically identifies him as a Cushite, a term commonly referring to people from regions south of Egypt, often associated with Ethiopia or Sudan.
His bravery in rescuing the prophet Jeremiah shows that courage and compassion transcend nationality.
Lesson from Ebed-Melech
• True courage often means defending the innocent.
• One person’s action can save another’s life.
The Shulammite Woman — A Voice of Love and Beauty
In the poetic book Song of Solomon, the Shulammite woman describes herself in striking words:
“I am dark, but beautiful.”
Her description reflects the diversity of people represented in the Bible and celebrates beauty across cultures.
Lesson from the Shulammite Woman
• God’s creation includes a rich diversity of people.
• Love and dignity are central themes of Scripture.
